In Flight - Sky Watch Friday #11

I already posted this earlier and thought I may as well use it as my Sky Watch entry.

I spent my time at the beach trying to capture the birds that were out and about. I don't know if these are all brown pelicans or not so feel free to chime in if I've got this wrong. There were so many of them out that a couple of times they flew overhead in a flock. Since I couldn't seem to capture them as they dove into the water I took a short video clip. Now mind you, this is a horrible clip because I was fighting the wind and the bird was so fast, but I wanted to document at least one dive into the water which comes at the end of the clip.

I still think they look like pterodactyls. :-)

My Bad Bird Shots

These aren't too bad but they sure aren't the quality of some of the jaw dropping photos I've seen. Still, I wanted to share them just the same. This was the first time in my visits to Descanso Gardens that there were so many out and about and I think it was because it was overcast and a little cooler than the other days. I haven't a clue what they are. I was just excited that I finally saw some. :-) If you know what these birds are please feel free to let me know.

This little one swooped down while I was standing still and decided to play in this puddle of water.

And these are about the prettiest ducks I've ever seen. They are ducks, right? :-)

This was the first bird I captured a photo of at Descanso Gardens, maybe last week. I saw quite a few of them on this day. And looking at the feathers and coloring I think the one following this picture is a female or baby of the same bird...but maybe not but they were pecking around through the grass together. I've been trying to look these up and I think the one with the curved beak is a California Thrasher. I saw a pic that looked like the other which read California Towhee but don't take it as fact.

And this is where a bird was. LOL! It took off before I could snap it.

I'd Be A Butterfly

I was hoping to get some butterfly shots when I went to the Descanso Gardens. There were plenty flying around but only a couple decided not to be too shy. Some of these aren't as clear as I like but I still like them so I'm sharing them anyway (smile). You know, if I could fly I'd be a butterfly.

The butterfly is a flying flower,
The flower a tethered butterfly.

I don't know if these dark ones are moths or butterflies...

More Lorikeets

I have a lot of lorikeets pictures because I think they're so colorful and they've been fun to photograph.

Butterflies 3

Butterflies 2

I think this is a Monarch butterfly but I don't know for sure.

Butterflies 1

I usually don't see many butterflies and they bounce around so much I haven't had much luck. Not today. I either found the perfect spot or they were doing me a favor by sitting long enough to let me capture them. Sorry, I don't know the names of the butterflies I'm posting.

Dragonflies

I've been hoping to catch some dragonflies and butterflies one of these days. Today was the day! The butterflies will be in a separate post.

The Geese

I haven't been out so I've been going back through pictures I've taken. When I get out I usually come back with so many pics and I get excited about editing them, or I have so many that I only pic out my favs and never post the others. So... I thought I'd post some of the other ones over the next few posts.

I think these are Canadian geese and I took these at the Arboretum. These geese were everywhere. It was great! I guess since they live there they had a right to cross the road like they owned it.
