Watery Wednesday #13

Don't forget that if you're participating in Watery Wednesday CLICK HERE for the meme which is now in it's own blog. These were some of the birds out on the lake this morning. I'm pretty sure the first one is a cormorant. I looked up the middle one which looks like a green heron, and the last one is, of course, an egret.

I like how you say "of course" in identifying the egret. All the birds look familiar, the names are familiar, and maybe someday I'll be able to put the two together! Great photos.

Leora - LOL! I said "of course" because I found it was the easiest one for me to first identify and remember. :-D

I have no idea what the birds are but all the ones standing tall seem to feel like they are kings and queens of their mountains. LOL

Cormorant, or possibly an anhinga, if you have those where you live. Hard to tell from this distance, but just by the shape of his little rear end, I'm going to agree with you that it's a cormorant.

I read somewhere that genetically, all egrets are in the heron family. They do have some of the same physical traits, one of them being the hunched posture that you have captured in both of these.

Love this meme, don't always have water shots, but whenever I do, I'll be back! I've got a beach scene from Sanibel Island today.

I hope you don't mind, but I've tagged you for a meme. The background is in my blog post at http://wrenaissance.com/2008/12/my-top-5-birding-locations/ but instead of 5 places, I'm asking you to share the five greatest joys you find in nature.

Thanks, and I hope you'll play.

Yuppers, the first one is a cormorant. Interesting fact about them is they have no natural oil on their feathers like ducks and geese. So you will often see them out of water with their wings spread just like in your photo. I'm envious of the green heron photo. They usually skulk around the edges of the opposite end of any body water that I see them on. Thanks for sharing

They're all nice, and each is interesting in its own way. I, too, think the top one may be some type of cormorant, but I'm not certain. Love the last shot. Looks like he's shrugging -- or shivering.
