Black Crowned Night Heron

I went up to the lake the other day and just after I got out of the car, I walked under a tree and a bird moved loudly in the tree above me. It was no small bird. It took me a moment to find it but I did. I was surprised it was a Black Crowned Heron.

It was well hidden among the branches but I did manage to find a clearing through the branches to get a shot. I know they fly but I didn't know they did the tree thing.

I was surprised and treated by how many of them there were flying around and walking around the edge of the lake. Of course, they didn't let me get too close before they took off.

Great shots of it TB. Ours never come out into the open like that but are always hidden in the trees so I have never been able to get a shot of it. :(

What a Beauty! You got lovely shots of him!
We have a bunch of herons at the lakes here often sitting in the trees.
I "shot" one a few days back, a grey one, but he got me by surprise, flying right overhead and I got only the wings sharp. Oh well ;)

Awsome shots of the bird. Birds are so cool. I have a farm over an hour away from my home. It is realy "out in the wilderness" and the birds over there are so neat to listen to. I guess I pay more attention because there are no other noises to distract me from them.

Bonelli Park? There's so much bird activities there. I will calendar the jazz festival in July.

Such cool photos! I have never seen a black crowned heron before, only the great blue and the green. And my view of the green is usually his rear end as he flies away! I have seen photos of heron nests in the trees, but it still amazes me that they can do it!
